Guest riding a long natural rock slide down a private canyon in El Yunque

Five rungs. Five honest answers about your body.

Every rung on this site states its fitness rule plainly. This page puts the five side by side so you can match the day to the bodies in your group, instead of the other way around.

Fitness on this ladder is not about pace or a gym habit. It comes down to five things: how long you are on your feet, what the ground is like, how much of the day is deep water, whether you have to lift yourself, and how you feel about height. Each rung below states the operator's requirement, then what it feels like on the day. The guides have been reading groups on the south side of El Yunque since 2005, with 4.9 stars from 200+ TripAdvisor reviews.

Rung 1: what does the rope swing and cliff dive ask of you?

Not much, and that is the point. Rung 1, the Rope Swing and Cliff Dive, is a short rainforest hike in, then a few hours of play on natural rock waterslides, a rope swing over the pool and one cliff jump the guide assesses and you can skip. About three hours. The rock at the slides is wet, so you need steady feet. Minimum age 8. Non-swimmers are welcome; the vest floats you and the guide assists in the pools. If you can manage a short uphill walk and a few hours of getting in and out of water, you are fit enough.

Rung 2: how much walking is the Multi-Waterfall Hike?

Four hours of it, nearly all on wet, uneven rock. Rung 2, the Multi-Waterfall Hike, follows a forest footpath to a private river, then moves upstream pool to pool: rock slides, whirlpools, a chain of waterfalls and Taino petroglyphs near the top. You must be able to bend your knees fully and walk wet, uneven rock for the whole four hours: stepping off boulders, crouching under ledges, climbing up beside each fall. It is not for guests with impaired mobility. It does not ask for swimming. The life jacket floats you across every deep hole. Minimum age 10, under 18 with a parent or guardian. Closed-toe shoes that can get wet, and at least a liter of water; there are no stores past the trailhead.

Rung 3: which Charco El Hippie tier fits your body?

Both tiers run on the same day, and they ask very different things. Rung 3, Waterfall Cave and Petroglyphs, is Charco El Hippie. The Pool and Waterfall tier is the gentle one: natural pools beneath the main waterfall, flip-flops allowed, ages 4 and up, for families and anyone who wants the river without the work. The Adventure Expedition adds the river rapids, a jungle hike to a hidden waterfall and the Taino petroglyph walk, helmet on, sneakers required. It asks for comfort in deep water and legs for a hike after the rapids. Plan on 5 to 7 hours door to door. If someone would rather wade than work, the Pool tier keeps everyone together.

Rung 4: how fit do you need to be for canyoning?

Good physical condition, and the operator means it. Rung 4, Canyoning, is about six hours descending a private river canyon. You ride the long rock slide, body raft the whirlpools on your back, feet first, swim across pools where you cannot stand, climb out over wet rock, then clip into cable on short via ferrata sections beside the falls. Cliff jumps come at two or three heights the guide sets, every one optional with a walk-around. You must be comfortable in deep water. A group that has been sedentary for a long stretch will struggle here, not at the jumps but when the climbs out of the pools add up. Minimum age 10, under 18 with a parent or guardian. Bring 1.5 liters of water and laced closed-toe shoes with grip.

Rung 5: can you lift your own bodyweight?

That is the test on the via ferrata, and you can run it at home. Rung 5, Via Ferrata, is Puerto Rico's only dedicated via ferrata tour route: steel cables, rungs, ladders and bridges fixed to a rock face beside a cascade. You climb most of the day using legs, arms and core, clipped in the whole way, with a guide beside you calling every clip. No climbing experience is needed. The requirement is that you can lift your own bodyweight on a climb or stairs. Climb a long staircase pulling on the rail as well as pushing with your legs; if that feels manageable rather than alarming, you have the strength. You also need a head that is fine with height, because you are on open rock for hours. There is no height limit. Minimum age 15, under 18 with a parent or guardian.

Water day or hard day?

Most sizing comes down to these two rungs.

If the question is "can my group walk a river for four hours", it is rung 2. If the question is "are we fit enough for the hard one", it is rung 4.

Ages are a separate question. See which rungs fit which ages.

Common questions

What a coach gets asked about fitness.

Do you need to be athletic for an El Yunque adventure tour?

Not for rungs 1 to 3. Rung 1 is a short hike and a few hours of play, rung 2 is four hours of walking wet rock, and rung 3's Pool tier takes ages 4 and up in flip-flops. Rungs 4 and 5 ask for good physical condition, and rung 5 adds the bodyweight test. Pick by what your group can do today, not what it hopes to do.

Which El Yunque adventure is the easiest on the body?

The Pool and Waterfall tier of rung 3, Charco El Hippie. You spend the day in natural pools beneath the main waterfall, flip-flops are allowed, and the minimum age is 4. Rung 1 is close behind: about three hours, a short hike in and a life jacket for the pools, ages 8 and up.

Can I do the Multi-Waterfall Hike if I do not exercise?

Usually, yes, if you can bend your knees fully and walk wet, uneven rock for four hours. The hike is not fast and the vest does the floating, but there is no flat ground and no bench. It is not for impaired mobility. If a four-hour walk on a rocky beach would be hard for you, choose rung 1 or the rung 3 Pool tier.

How hard is canyoning in El Yunque?

It is the hard water day on this ladder. About six hours in a private canyon: the long slide, swimming across pools, climbing out over wet rock, body rafting whirlpools and clipping into cable on short climbs. Good physical condition is required and you must be comfortable in deep water. Every cliff jump is optional with a walk-around beside it.

What does lifting your own bodyweight mean for the via ferrata?

It means you can pull and push yourself up a climb or a long flight of stairs without help, and keep doing it through most of a day. The via ferrata is steel rungs, ladders and cables up a rock face, so your arms and core work with your legs. No climbing experience is needed, but that strength is not optional.

Is there a height limit on the via ferrata?

No, there is no height limit on the via ferrata. The requirements are age 15 and up, good physical condition, comfort with heights and the ability to lift your own bodyweight on a climb or stairs. The harness, helmet and lanyards are fitted and checked at the start, and the guide climbs beside you and calls every clip.

I have bad knees. Which rung should I pick?

Start with rung 1 or the rung 3 Pool tier, and message first. Rung 2 requires bending your knees fully for four hours on wet rock, rung 4 adds six hours of climbing out of pools, and rung 5 climbs most of the day. Rung 1 still has a short hike and wet rock at the slides, so tell the guide at the start.

Can someone with impaired mobility join an El Yunque tour?

Rung 2 is stated as not for impaired mobility, and rungs 4 and 5 ask more of the body than rung 2 does. Rung 1 and the rung 3 Pool tier are the rungs to ask about. Message with the specifics before you book, so the answer comes from a guide who knows the ground rather than from a hopeful guess.

Do the harder rungs require swimming?

Rung 4 and the rung 3 Adventure Expedition ask you to be comfortable in deep water, because you cross pools where you cannot stand, with a life jacket on. Rungs 1 and 2 need no swimming experience; the vest floats you. Rung 5 is a climbing day with the river as the backdrop. The non-swimmers page walks through each rung.

What are the minimum ages, rung by rung?

Rung 1 is ages 8 and up, rung 2 is 10 and up, rung 3 is 4 and up on the Pool tier, rung 4 is 10 and up with good fitness, and rung 5 is 15 and up. Guests under 18 join with a parent or guardian. Age is the floor; the fitness rule on each rung still applies.

How much water and food should I bring?

Rung 2 asks for at least 1 liter of water and a snack per person, and rungs 4 and 5 ask for 1.5 liters and snacks in a backpack worn on both shoulders. There are no stores past the trailhead on the river tours. Rungs 2, 4 and 5 include a Puerto Rican lunch of tostones and pollo frito.

Can I skip a jump or a climb on the day?

Every cliff jump on rungs 1 and 4 is optional, with a walk-around beside each one and heights set by the guide. On rung 5 the climb is the day, so the decision happens before you book, not on the rock. If you are unsure whether you want the via ferrata, do canyoning first and see how the cable sections feel.
