What this rung asks of you
Three honest answers before you book rung 1.
This is the first rung for a reason. It still asks you to walk wet ground, sit in moving water, and make one decision at the top of a rock. Here is what each of those means.
Your body
You hike in on a rainforest trail that is wet, rooty and uneven, then climb back up slick rock between slides. Nothing is long, but your knees and ankles do the work.
- Walk uneven, wet ground without a handrail
- Bend your knees fully to sit into a chute
- Climb a short rock bank on hands and feet
Deep water
Every slide and the rope swing end in a pool, and some pools are over your head. You wear a life jacket the whole time and the guide is in the water beside the group.
- No swimming experience needed
- Life jacket fitted before you touch the river
- Guide assists non-swimmers through every pool
Height and nerve
One cliff jump, and only if you want it. The guide reads the water that morning and sets the spot. You can climb up, look over, and walk back down. Nobody counts you in.
- The jump is optional, every time
- Height set by the guide on the day
- The rope swing is lower and most guests take it
Book rung 1
Two ways to get there.
Same river, same guide, same gear. The difference is who drives and whether you stop for food on the way home.
Self-drive
Meet the guide in Fajardo at 8:00 AM or 1:00 PM, gear up, then follow the guide's vehicle to the trailhead in your own car. The exact meeting spot arrives with your booking confirmation.
- About 3 hours on the river
- Helmet and life jacket fitted at the meetup
- Snacks and refreshments after the river
- Back in Fajardo with the rest of the day free
Hotel pickup
Round trip from your hotel in San Juan, Rio Grande, Luquillo or Fajardo. No rental car, no directions. On the way back the van stops at the Luquillo beach kiosks for local food.
- Everything in self-drive
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Luquillo kiosks stop for lunch, food at your own cost
- Up to about 7 hours door to door

Your day
What three hours on the river looks like.
Shown for the 8:00 AM departure. The 1:00 PM departure runs the same order, later in the day.
- Morning
Hotel pickup (pickup tier)
If you booked the $95 tier, the van collects you at your hotel in San Juan, Rio Grande, Luquillo or Fajardo and drives you east to meet the guide.
- 8:00 AM
Meet the guide in Fajardo, gear up
Self-drive guests meet the guide in Fajardo. A short briefing, helmets and life jackets fitted and checked, then you follow the guide's vehicle to the trailhead on the south side of El Yunque.
- Morning
Hike in
A rainforest trail down to the river. It is wet, rooty and uneven, and your guide sets a pace the whole group can hold. This is the part your shoes were chosen for.
- Morning
The natural waterslides
Rock chutes polished smooth by the river. You sit, the guide tells you where to put your hands, and the water does the rest. Climb back up and go again as many times as the group has time for.
- Morning
The rope swing
A rope over the pool. Hold on, swing out, let go when the guide calls it. It is the lowest drop of the day and the one almost everyone takes.
- Morning
The cliff, if you want it
The guide checks the pool and sets the jump spot for that day. You climb up, look, and decide. Walking back down is a normal choice and nobody comments on it.
- Midday
Pools, snacks and refreshments
Time in the waterfall pools, then snacks and drinks before you change into dry clothes for the walk out.
- Midday
Hike out, back to Fajardo
Back up the trail to the vehicles. Self-drive guests are done here, with the afternoon free.
- Afternoon
Luquillo kiosks, then your hotel (pickup tier)
On the $95 tier the van stops at the Luquillo beach kiosks for local food at your own cost, then drops you back at your hotel.

Read before you book
- Minimum age 8. Guests under 18 join with a parent or guardian.
- You must be able to walk a wet, uneven trail and climb slick rock on hands and feet. Not for impaired mobility.
- Closed-toe shoes with grip are required for the trail and the slides.
- Come sober. The slides and the jump need your full balance and judgment.
- The cliff jump is optional and its height is set by the guide on the day. Non-swimmers wear a life jacket and get the guide's hand through every pool.
- The river decides the route. After heavy rain the guide changes or skips sections; if the tour cannot run safely you move to another date or tour at no charge.
Too easy?
The next rung up.
Rung 1 is the bottom of the ladder. If you want more river and less road, step up.
Common questions
What people ask about the rope swing and cliff dive.
How high is the cliff jump on this El Yunque tour?
We do not publish a height, because the guide sets the jump spot on the day after reading the pool and the water level. What you can count on is that it is one jump, it is always optional, and you can climb up, look over the edge and walk back down without anyone saying a word.
Do I have to do the rope swing or the cliff jump?
No. Both are optional and the guide never pushes anyone. Plenty of guests ride the natural waterslides, swim the pools and skip the drops entirely. The rope swing is the lower of the two and most people take it; the cliff is a personal decision you make at the top, not at booking.
Can a non-swimmer do the natural waterslides?
Yes. Non-swimmers are welcome on rung 1. You wear a life jacket from the moment you reach the river, the guide is in the water with the group, and you get a hand through every pool. The slides land you in water where the vest floats you to the edge, so swimming strokes are not required.
Is 8 really old enough for the rope swing and cliff dive tour?
The minimum age is 8, and guests under 18 come with a parent or guardian. An 8 year old who can walk a wet forest trail and sit still in a rock chute does fine on the slides. The rope swing and the cliff are optional for every age, and the guide decides who jumps where.
How hard is the hike in to the waterslides?
Moderate. The trail into the river is wet, rooty and uneven, and between slides you climb back up slick rock using your hands. None of it is long, but it is not a paved path, so this rung is not suited to impaired mobility. Closed-toe shoes with grip make the difference between easy and tiring.
What does the $95 hotel pickup tier add over the $45 self-drive?
Transport and food. The $95 tier collects you from your hotel in San Juan, Rio Grande, Luquillo or Fajardo, drives you to the river and back, and stops at the Luquillo beach kiosks on the way home for local food at your own cost. The river part of the day is the same on both tiers.
Should I pick the 8:00 AM or the 1:00 PM departure?
Either runs the full route with the same guide-led slides, swing and optional jump. Take 8:00 AM if you want the afternoon free for the beach or an evening Bio Bay kayak from Fajardo. Take 1:00 PM if you are arriving that morning or would rather sleep in. Both book from the same calendar.
What shoes do I need for the rock slides?
Closed-toe shoes with grip that can get soaked. Sneakers you do not care about are ideal. Flip-flops and anything that slides off your foot in moving water are not allowed on the trail or the slides. Wear swimwear under your clothes and pack a towel and a full dry change for the walk out.
What happens if it rains on tour day?
Short rain changes nothing; you are wet anyway. After heavy rain the river rises, so the guide can skip or reorder sections, and the jump spot may move or be dropped for the day. If the river is unsafe the tour does not run and you move to another date or tour at no charge. Weather cancellations are refunded in full.
Is lunch included on the El Yunque waterslides tour?
Lunch is not included. Snacks and refreshments after the river are included on both tiers. The $95 hotel pickup tier adds a stop at the Luquillo beach kiosks on the way back, where you buy your own lunch from the local food stands. Self-drive guests finish in Fajardo with the afternoon free to eat wherever they like.
Where do self-drive guests meet the guide?
In Fajardo, about 25 minutes from the river. The exact meeting location is sent with your booking confirmation. You gear up there, then follow the guide's vehicle to the trailhead on the south side of El Yunque in your own car, so you need your own vehicle for the self-drive tier.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. If the operator cancels for weather or river conditions, you are refunded in full or moved to another date or tour at no charge, whichever you prefer. Book with the Book Now button above and the confirmation email carries the details.
