A waterfall cave. Taino carvings. Seafood after.

The Charco El Hippie Adventure Expedition walks you through the jungle to a hidden waterfall cave, shows you the Taino carvings in the river rock, and puts a helmet on you for the rapids before lunch on the Malecon de Naguabo. What this rung asks of you

Rung 3 asks for deep water comfort and a full day. Or it asks for nothing at all.

The two tiers sit on the same rung because they share the morning and the lunch. They do not share the river. Read both columns before you pick.

Your body

The Adventure Expedition is 5 to 7 hours with the rapids, the jungle trail to the hidden waterfall and the petroglyph walk inside it. You walk wet, uneven rock with a helmet on and sneakers laced.

  • Adventure Expedition: steady footing on wet rock, a jungle trail, moving water
  • Pool and Waterfall: a walk to the pools and time in them, ages 4 and up

Fitness, rung by rung →

Deep water

The rapids put you in water you cannot always stand in. That is the one hard line on this rung: the Adventure Expedition is for guests comfortable in deep water. The pool tier stays in the natural pools beneath the main waterfall.

  • Adventure Expedition: comfortable in deep water, no exceptions
  • Pool and Waterfall: the calm option, where a four year old sits beside you

What each rung asks of a non-swimmer →

Height and nerve

Nothing on this rung is built around height and there is nothing to climb. The nerve this day asks for is in the rapids: moving water, a helmet, and trust in the line the guide sets. The pool tier asks for none of it.

  • Adventure Expedition: nerve for moving water, not for heights
  • Want jumps? Rung 1 has one and rung 4 has several

Your day

How the day runs, pickup to boardwalk.

Times are set for the pickup and the meetup. The rest moves with the river and the group.

  1. 7:00 AM

    San Juan hotel pickup

On the San Juan pickup tier the day starts at your hotel. Wear your swimwear under your clothes so the morning moves fast once you reach the river.

  2. 8:00 AM

    Fajardo meetup

Meet at Farmacia Caridad #39, next to Ralph's Supermarket, off Highway 3 in Fajardo. The south side of El Yunque is about 25 minutes from here.

  3. Morning

    The bakery stop

Puerto Rican coffee and fresh pastries at a local bakery, at your own cost. Eat now. Lunch comes after the river.

  4. Morning

    Helmet on, into the rapids

Adventure Expedition: the helmet goes on and you move through the river rapids, moving water between boulders where you cannot always stand. Sneakers stay laced the whole way.

  5. Morning

The jungle hike to the hidden waterfall

Adventure Expedition: a jungle trail leads to a waterfall you only reach on foot. Wet rock, roots and shade. This is where your legs earn the lunch.

  6. Midday

    The petroglyph walk

Adventure Expedition only: the guide walks you to Taino petroglyphs carved into the river boulders and explains what you are looking at. Hands off the carvings, cameras welcome.

  7. Midday

The pools beneath the main waterfall

Pool and Waterfall tier: this is your river. Natural pools under the main fall, shallow edges for the four year olds, deeper water for the parents. Flip-flops are fine here.

  8. Afternoon

Lunch on the Malecon de Naguabo

Seafood on the boardwalk, 30+ restaurants to choose from, food at your own cost. Order what you like and take your time; the river part of the day is done.

  9. Afternoon

Back to Fajardo or your hotel

The day ends at the Fajardo meetup point or at your San Juan hotel, 5 to 7 hours after it started. The evening is yours.

Common questions

What people ask before they book Charco El Hippie.

Which tier should I book, the Adventure Expedition or Pool and Waterfall?

Book the Adventure Expedition if you are comfortable in deep water and want the rapids, the jungle hike to the hidden waterfall and the petroglyph walk. Book Pool and Waterfall for anyone aged 4 and up who wants the natural pools beneath the main waterfall without the rapids. A split group can book one of each for the same date.

How rough are the rapids on the Adventure Expedition?

Rough enough that the tier requires sneakers, puts a helmet on you and asks that you are comfortable in deep water. You move through moving water where you cannot always stand. The guide reads the river that morning and sets the line. If that is more than you want, the pool tier stays beneath the main waterfall.

Can my child join the Adventure Expedition?

The Adventure Expedition is sized for guests comfortable in deep water who want the rapids, so judge your child by that, not by age alone. The minimum age of 4 applies to the Pool and Waterfall tier. Message us with ages and how each child handles deep water and we will say which tier fits.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer for Charco El Hippie?

For the Adventure Expedition you need to be comfortable in deep water, because the rapids include places where you cannot stand. For the Pool and Waterfall tier you do not. It stays in the natural pools beneath the main waterfall, where the youngest guests sit beside a parent. Weak swimmers belong on the pool tier.

What shoes do I wear at Charco El Hippie?

Sneakers on the Adventure Expedition, laced and ready to get wet, because you walk wet rock through the rapids and a jungle trail to the hidden waterfall. Flip-flops are fine on the Pool and Waterfall tier. Whatever you wear on the river comes back soaked, so pack a dry pair for the lunch stop.

Will I see the petroglyphs on the Pool and Waterfall tier?

No. The Taino petroglyph walk is part of the Adventure Expedition only. The Pool and Waterfall tier spends its river time in the natural pools beneath the main waterfall. If the carvings are the reason you are booking, choose the Adventure Expedition and make sure everyone in your party is comfortable in deep water.

What time does the day start, and where?

Hotel pickup in San Juan is at 7:00 AM. The Fajardo meetup is at 8:00 AM at Farmacia Caridad #39, next to Ralph's Supermarket, off Highway 3. Both tiers use the same times. The day runs 5 to 7 hours and ends back at the meetup point or at your San Juan hotel.

What do the bakery stop and lunch cost?

Both are at your own cost and are not in the tour price. The morning starts at a local bakery for Puerto Rican coffee and fresh pastries. After the river you eat at the Malecon de Naguabo seafood boardwalk, where 30+ restaurants line the water and you order what you like. Bring a card or cash.

What is included in the price?

The local guide, the San Juan hotel pickup or Fajardo meetup you booked, the river day on your tier, and a helmet on the Adventure Expedition. The bakery and the Malecon de Naguabo are stops, not inclusions, so you pay for your own food at both. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure.

What happens if the river is high on the day?

The guide decides on the morning. Short rain changes nothing. After heavy rain the day is shaped around what is safe, and if the tour cannot run, the weather cancellation is refunded in full. Nobody is sent into rapids the guide would not run, and the pool tier is the fallback for anyone unsure.

Can we do the Bio Bay kayak the same evening?

Yes. Charco El Hippie ends in the afternoon, in time for the evening Bio Bay kayak departure from Fajardo, booked on the operator's main site from $85. River in the morning, seafood at midday, glowing water after dark is a common east coast day. Leave yourself the gap in between for a shower and dry clothes.

How does this compare with the Multi-Waterfall Hike and canyoning?

Charco El Hippie is the full day: the rapids, the pools, the petroglyph walk and the Malecon lunch. The Multi-Waterfall Hike, rung 2, is four hours of pure river with more water time. Canyoning, rung 4, is harder: a private canyon with cliff jumps, body rafting and cable climbs. Pick it if this one sounds too easy.
